A storm shelter in Mustang goes in under a building permit from Community Development. As of October 2026, the city’s minimum permit fee is $54.50, including a $4.50 state fee. Ask the installer to include the permit in the quote.

Canadian County and Mustang’s own warning

The tornado figures further down cover all of Canadian County, which Mustang shares with Yukon. On May 24, 1973, one F4 tornado in the county killed 2 people. Its 13.3-mile path stayed inside the county. The City of Mustang says there are no public shelters in Mustang. It also says its sirens are meant to warn people outdoors, not inside their homes. A shelter at the house is the plan that fits both points.

The permit and the pre-pour inspection

Permits are sold by Community Development at 1501 N Mustang Rd. The published fee list has no storm shelter line, so the $54.50 minimum is the starting figure. Ask the installer to confirm the amount for your shelter and to show it in the written quote.

One Mustang rule matters for any shelter job with concrete: all concrete must be inspected before it is poured. That covers a new pad for an above-ground unit and any concrete poured on site. The pour date in the quote has to leave room for that inspection. Ask the installer who schedules it.

The fee list also includes a $100 general contractor license. Shelter installers do not hold an Oklahoma state license for that work. Have the company confirm which Mustang license it needs for the work. A company that already works in Mustang can also tell you how lot lines, easements and garage placement apply at your address.

How the Fire Department registry works

The Mustang Fire Department keeps a Storm Shelter Registry so responders can find people trapped by debris. It accepts safe rooms, storm cellars, in-ground shelters and basements. The details are used only by Mustang Fire Department responders.

The department’s form says a permitted shelter should already be in its database. Fill it out online or call the Fire Department administration office in either case:

  • you bought a house that came with a shelter
  • you are not sure the shelter was ever permitted

Matching a shelter to a Mustang house

Mustang’s homes are newer than Yukon’s. The Census median year built is 1992. 3,351 of the city’s 8,481 homes date from 2000 or later. The type of shelter depends on the garage slab and the yard. An installer has to see both in person.

  • Below the garage floor: the $6,000–$15,000 row is a national figure. A local quote is the way to a Mustang price.
  • Outdoor underground: check easements on your plat first. A below-ground shelter in a floodplain is not eligible for SoonerSafe.
  • Above-ground safe room: some precast concrete rooms are set on prepared soil. The steel models in the price table need a concrete pad. A new pad means a pre-pour inspection.

What to ask about price

Angi’s September 2026 estimate for a typical Oklahoma project is $3,000–$8,000. The table compares published prices by type; confirm that the company serves your address. For Mustang, the quote should name each of these as a separate line:

  • the permit fee
  • dirt haul-off
  • delivery
  • any pad

Send the form below to ask for a price from an installer who works in Mustang. Say in the comment whether you have a garage or a yard spot in mind. Once the installer has seen the site, accept a quote that:

  • covers the permit
  • gives a pour date that allows for the city’s inspection
  • prices the pad, haul-off and installation one by one
