Yukon requires a permit and fee for every storm shelter. The application needs drawings sealed by a licensed Oklahoma engineer and a copy of your installer contract. The city also publishes rules on placement and cleanup:

Two common placements: below the garage floor and underground in the yard.
  • the shelter sits at least 5 feet from the house foundation
  • waste dirt is gone within 5 business days
  • a shelter that can be seen from the street is landscaped within 30 days

Canadian County’s record and the 2013 storm

Yukon shares the Canadian County record shown below with Mustang. One entry stands out for Yukon readers. On May 31, 2013, an EF3 tornado killed 8 people. Its 16.2-mile path stayed within Canadian County. Plan where your household will shelter at home, and follow the National Weather Service during warnings.

What goes in with a Yukon application

The City of Yukon’s storm shelter requirements sheet, published by Development Services, lists:

  • drawings and specifications for the shelter, signed and sealed by a licensed Oklahoma engineer
  • a copy of your contract with the installer
  • an application from either the owner or a licensed contractor
  • the permit fee

A copy of the contract goes in with the application, so its wording matters. Ask the installer to write into it:

  • the sealed drawing
  • the permit fee
  • whether the installer files the application

Once the permit is issued, it has to be posted where it can be seen from the street.

Shelter installation has no Oklahoma state licensing requirement. Have the installer confirm what Yukon requires of the contractor named on the application. Any electrical work needs a state-licensed electrician.

Where a shelter can go on a Yukon lot

An outdoor shelter in Yukon must:

  • follow all yard and building-line setbacks
  • stay out of utility easements
  • sit at least 5 feet from the house foundation, and farther for deeper shelters

On a small lot, the 5-foot rule and the easements together limit where a shelter fits. Ask the installer to mark the location on the drawing before you sign.

Two deadlines after the dig

Yukon gives 5 business days to haul away waste dirt. If the shelter can be seen from the street, it has to be landscaped within 30 days so it is concealed. At least one of the installer price lists in the table below charges extra for dirt haul-off. Ask each installer whether removal is included and whether it can meet the 5-day window. If an above-ground room or a hatch will be visible from the street, budget for plantings or screening around it.

Registering the finished shelter

The requirements sheet calls for registration, while the registry page calls it voluntary. The Storm Shelter Registry is run by the Development Services Stormwater/GIS Department. The form is online and free. The information is used after severe weather causes structural damage. File the form once the shelter is in. If you buy a house with an existing shelter, ask Stormwater/GIS whether its record needs updating.

Older homes and the shelter type

Yukon’s homes are older than Mustang’s next door. The Census estimate puts the median year built at 1979. Only 2,282 of 10,061 homes date from 2000 or later. A garage-floor shelter depends on the concrete slab and the garage layout. An outdoor unit depends on the 5-foot rule, setbacks and easements. For a garage unit, ask the installer how it checks an older slab before cutting it.

Pricing a Yukon shelter

A typical Oklahoma storm shelter project runs $3,000–$8,000, according to Angi’s September 2026 estimate. The table below compares published prices by type; ask the installer to confirm service to your address. A Yukon quote should also cover what the city’s rules make necessary:

  • the sealed engineer drawing
  • the permit fee
  • dirt haul-off within 5 business days
  • any landscaping

Use the form below to request a quote for your Yukon address. Ask for:

  • a visit to the lot
  • the shelter’s spot marked against the 5-foot line and the easements
  • a written total that includes haul-off, the drawing and the permit
