From 1950 through 2025, 112 tornadoes touched Canadian County, according to NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center (SPC). The record includes nine tornadoes rated F3/EF3 or stronger. The two deadliest came two years apart: an EF5 on May 24, 2011 that killed 9 people, and an EF3 on May 31, 2013 that killed 8.

May 2011 and May 2013

The 2011 EF5 injured 181 people. Its path ran 63.1 miles through Canadian County and two other counties.

The 2013 tornado was rated EF3, a step below the county’s F4s. Yet it killed more people than any of them. It injured 26 people, and its 16.2-mile path is recorded entirely inside Canadian County.

Other tornadoes in the record

  • May 24, 1973, F4: 2 deaths on a 13.3-mile path inside the county.
  • May 25, 2019, EF3: 2 deaths and 29 injuries on a path of only 2.2 miles.
  • April 30, 1978, F4: no deaths; the path also touched Oklahoma County.
  • May 22, 1981, F4: no deaths on a 16.7-mile path that also crossed a neighboring county.

In all, tornadoes that touched the county killed 21 people. Like the figures above, that total counts each tornado’s full path, including any stretch outside the county.

2016–2025

In the last ten years of the data, the county recorded 13 tornadoes. One of them was rated EF3 or stronger: the 2019 tornado above. That is a lower recent count than in Cleveland County (35) or Oklahoma County (27).

Clay under Canadian County

About 22% of the county’s mapped land has soils rated high or very high for shrink-swell. That means clay that swells when wet and shrinks as it dries. The largest such area is Bethany silt loam on nearly flat ground, about 40,800 acres. Its linear extensibility (how much the soil swells) is 7.7%, in the high class. If you are comparing quotes for an in-ground or garage-floor unit, ask each installer how it handles this kind of ground, since county map figures are not a test of your own lot.

Getting a quote in Canadian County

Request a quote and ask for an on-site look at where the shelter would go. Have the installer confirm any permit needed and include its fee. Also ask for an itemized price that lists:

  • the unit
