A floor you can feel sloping as you walk is a sign to have a repair company measure. Changes in clay soil moisture can move the foundation up or down. A level can help you record the slope before the visit.

What a sloping floor feels like
You may notice it underfoot before you see anything. ASCE’s homeowner guide lists a sloping floor among the indoor signs of soil movement. It names these alongside it:
- cracks or gaps in tile, vinyl or other floor coverings;
- gaps along the top or bottom of walls;
- cracks at wall corners;
- doors that stick because their frames have warped.
The ASCE Texas Section guideline, written for engineers on Texas clay, gives a sense of scale. By its account, people usually notice a floor tilt once it passes 1 percent. Ask the company to interpret measurements alongside the other signs in your home.
Slab or pier-and-beam: two different starting points
Slab homes. Clay swells when wet and shrinks when dry, and ASCE says moisture changes move foundations up and down. Ask the company to show which areas of the slab are higher or lower. Have it explain what supports its view of the cause.
Pier-and-beam homes. Ask for the floor framing and supports to be checked during the assessment. If the house has a crawl space, confirm whether the company will inspect it. Point out any soft or bouncy spots as well as the slope. Ask whether the proposed work addresses those spots too.
Simple checks you can do today
Use a carpenter’s level and a tape measure to make a record for the assessment.
- Lay the level on the floor along the slope. Lift the low end until the bubble centers.
- Measure the gap under the low end and record the length of your level.
- Repeat in a few spots: across the room, near outside walls, and in the doorways.
- Write down each number, the spot and the date.
- Check the same spots again in a few months, after the season changes.
Bring the notes to the assessment and point out any changes between checks.
What makes it urgent
The ASCE Texas guideline names excessive sagging and partial collapse among the signs a structure may have lost strength. If part of a floor gives way underfoot, keep people off it. If a section looks unstable, call emergency services. A gas smell means leaving the house right away and calling for help once outside.
If the slope came on fast, or new cracks show up in several rooms, schedule an assessment soon.
Why local clay matters for the quote
Wagoner County has high or very high shrink-swell soil on 38.7% of its mapped acres, and Canadian County on 21.7%, according to USDA survey estimates. Shrink-swell is how much the soil changes size as it wets and dries. These are county-wide numbers, but they show why a company that works on local clay is worth asking. The Mustang foundation repair page covers one Canadian County city, and the Oklahoma page has the other counties.
What the company measures and proposes
A repair company’s on-site visit is the normal first step. For a sloping floor, ask whether it will take floor-level readings across the house. The ASCE Texas guideline describes measuring relative floor heights in enough detail to show the floor’s shape. An independent structural engineer is an option if the cause is unclear, if two bids disagree, or if your lender or a buyer asks for an engineer’s report.
For a slab, the guideline lists underpinning, grouting and mudjacking among the repair methods. Underpinning means adding piers under the foundation. The steel push piers and helical piers pages explain how two common pier types work and what they cost. The guideline also calls for an engineer or authorized representative to measure floor levels after the work. Other signs that can come with a sloping floor are on the foundation warning signs page.
Requesting a quote for a sloping floor
Use the quote form to request a visit from a local repair company. Mention whether the house is on a slab or on piers and beams, and share your level readings. Ask for the written quote to include:
- a floor-level survey, before and after the work;
- the cause the company found;
- the repair it proposes, with the expected floor levels;
- confirmation of any permit needed, who will obtain it and the fee.
Questions to ask a repair company
For a major repair, or if the problem is unclear, will a licensed engineer review the plan?
Engineering guidelines describe an engineer's evaluation as the way to tell cosmetic cracks from structural damage. ASCE Texas Section guidelines (2022)
What is causing the movement, and what will be done about the water?
On shrink–swell clay, keeping soil moisture even around and under the foundation is the main way to reduce movement, so drainage and leaks matter as much as the repair. ASCE Geo-Institute, Living With Shrink/Swell Soils (2022)
Will the plumbing be tested after lifting, and who pays if a leak is found?
Engineering guidelines call for leak tests of water and sewer lines after a foundation is lifted. ASCE Texas Section guidelines (2022)
Will you measure floor levels before and after the repair?
Engineering guidelines call for an elevation survey after the work, which gives you a before-and-after record. ASCE Texas Section guidelines (2022)
Is the warranty in writing, what does it exclude, and does it transfer if I sell the house?
The FTC notes that a warranty won't necessarily cover all situations or repairs and advises getting spoken promises in writing. FTC, Warranties
Does this job need a city permit, and who will get it?
Oklahoma's Construction Industries Board tells homeowners to check whether a permit is needed and to see it before work begins. Oklahoma CIB, Home Repair Tips
Can I get three written estimates for the same plan?
Oklahoma's Construction Industries Board and Emergency Management recommend at least three estimates based on the same specifications. Oklahoma CIB, Home Repair Tips
Frequently asked questions
How much slope is too much?
Request floor-level measurements if you notice a slope or a change between checks. Ask the repair company to explain what the readings mean for your house.
Will the floor be perfectly level after the repair?
The ASCE Texas guideline says lifting is unlikely to leave a foundation level. Have the company put its expected floor levels in the quote.
My floor feels bouncy but not sloped. Is that the foundation?
Ask the company to check the floor framing and supports as well as the foundation. If there is a crawl space, ask whether the assessment includes it.
Does an assessment cost more for a pier-and-beam house?
Ask the repair company how your foundation type affects the visit and its price. Have it list the checks and any written findings included.
